District: 5th Middlesex District

From July 20 through July 23, American Future conducted research to assess opinions on issues of importance from likely voters in the 5th Middlesex Senate Democratic Primary election on September 1, 2026. Below is a summary of the most important findings of that research.

Research Findings – Positive Messages

Research shows that voters in the 5th Middlesex Senate District respond favorably to the following messages or candidate descriptions.

  1. A candidate who works to make healthcare more affordable by taking on the insurance companies that put profits ahead of patients.  One who is focused on bringing down premiums and co-pays because families should not have to choose whether they pay bills, see a doctor or fill their prescription.  A candidate who will stand up for women’s access to reproductive care and abortion rights.
  2. A candidate who upholds the basic pillars of our democracy and constitutional rights through legislative action at the State House.  One who fights back against the Trump Administration, and helped to pass new state laws protecting the civil rights of our immigrant and LGBTQ+ neighbors, strengthening privacy rights  and protecting healthcare for working families impacted by cuts made in Washington.
  3. A candidate who is the product of public schools, and has been working over the last decade to support efforts in early, K-12, and higher education. One who helped reform the state’s education funding law that invested $1.5 billion of new money in public schools and has made it a priority to make sure all Massachusetts students have access to a great education and excellent teachers.
  4. A candidate who will continue to champion laws and investments that make Massachusetts more affordable for working families.  One who helped to pass a $5 billion housing affordability package, holding utilities accountable to reduce energy rates, and maintain access to affordable public transportation services.

Research Findings – Vulnerabilities:

Research shows that voters in the 5th Middlesex Senate District respond unfavorably to the following messages or candidate descriptions.

  1. Support for building data centers in our community that could result in residents paying higher prices for energy and threaten our local supply of safe, clean drinking water. Siding with high-tech and artificial intelligence companies seeking to build data centers.
  2. A candidate who can be a disruptive presence in office, resulting in unprecedented action by colleagues.
  3. Views on crime that are too extreme and would threaten public safety.  This includes supporting the elimination of life sentences for murderers and other violent criminals.
